It is with sadness that I advise all personnel that retired Station Officer Fred Deegan passed away earlier this week due to illness.
Fred joined the MFB on 10 February 1950 and retired on 4 November 1983 having served the Brigade and the community for nearly 34 years.
After commencing his service at FS 1 (Eastern Hill), Fred served at FS 27 (Nunawading), FS 38 ( South Melbourne) and FS 25 (Oakleigh) before returning to Eastern Hill in 1961.
In 1962, Fred was promoted to the rank of Sub Station Officer (SSO) which was renamed Station Officer Grade 2 in 1970 – the equivalent of Station Officer today.
As an officer, Fred’s service alternated between FS 29 (Glenhuntly) and FS 35 (Windsor) before he returned to Eastern Hill where he saw out the remainder of his career.
My late father, District Officer Mick Adamson, worked with Fred for a number of years at various locations and described him as an excellent firefighter and officer. They remained good friends after retirement.
